Methodist Mission Home has been blessed with two fine programs of service - Family Services and SCHI (Southwest Center for Higher Independence) - located on a beautiful 25 acre campus. Over the past 25 years, the changing needs of the people we serve created an opportunity to seek a new approach in fully utilizing our facilities and services.
Our strategy identified potential collaborative partners within the nonprofit community who might benefit from the resources on our campus - transitional housing, counseling, assessment, vocational and life skills training, gymnasium, chapel and cafeteria. Our plan was to enable our existing programs and services, while expanding our outreach to people who were experiencing a major transition on the road to reaching their goals and realizing their dreams. Today, this self-supporting initiative, the Genesis Cooperative, includes five collaborative partners serving children and youth with disabilities, women with children recovering from substance abuse, adults who are deaf and blind, teens with disabilities transitioning from high school, and homeless women with children.
Genesis Cooperative Partners
Volunteer of America's LIGHT program provides highly structured transitional housing, counseling and supportive services to women with children recovering from substance abuse. Parenting support and education enables the women to better care for their children.
Northside Independent School District's LEAP (Life Education Advancement Program) uses a hands-on approach to teach high school students with disabilities the skills necessary to transition from living at home. Training is conducted in a fully equipped apartment setting.
HandsOn is a residential program serving adults who were born deaf, blind and mentally retarded. MMH is the location for HandsOn daily activities and offices.
San Antonio Food Bank's Community Kitchen provides eight weeks of intensive on-the-job training that permits graduates to obtain entry-level employment in a commercial kitchen. Training Chefs instruct unemployed, homeless people, students with disabilities in our SCHI, birth mothers, and women in LIGHT in the MMH Cafeteria.
Methodist Mission Home and the Genesis Cooperative partners are creating a self-sufficient, continuum of services and shared resources. Our synergy expands our capacity to serve people who are experiencing a major transition so that they may reach goals and realize their dreams. |
